What am I looking for?

on .

John 5:39 (NLT) 39 “You search the Scriptures because you think they give you eternal life. But the Scriptures point to me!

When I go to the Bible, what am I looking for? Eternal life? Answers? Wisdom? Forgiveness? Correction? How to live? Ammunition to straighten someone out? Help? Those we may find there but they are all very very short of what we should find. Jesus! For that is what is there. He is all of the above. That is the best part. Where is Jesus? Did I find him today in my reading of his word? Did I find the living word in the middle of the written word?

Salvation - earned or un-earned?

on .

Read a quote from Tim Keller, pastor from New York, that is well worth quoting and passing on.

"If you didn't earn your salvation how are you going to un-earn it?"

Jesus is Violenetly For the Church

on .

John 2:17 (NLT) 17 Then his disciples remembered this prophecy from the Scriptures: “Passion for God’s house will consume me.”

If Jesus was so concerned with stripping away the legalistic trappings, why did he seek to protect the temple and all that it stood for? He violently protected it. We do know that he was against abuse of worship. Against using the people for personal gain. But why make the statement by protecting the place where people gather? It is because as individuals, we are not God's temple but because we, corporately, are His temple. Through all the trappings Jesus wasn't throwing out the place of corporate worship but embracing it hugely. He was making sure we knew it was important but not for the sake of political motivation, personal gain and power but because the people were missing the point of it being about God and about Him inhabiting the place of worship. Jesus is for the church not against it. But it is easy to lose the church in he midst of divisions and power struggles and all sorts of things that have only a little to do with God. May we not lose out live for the church which is HIS body.

Justifying Our Sin

on .

2 Peter 3:3 (NLT)
3 Most importantly, I want to remind you that in the last days scoffers will come, mocking the truth and following their own desires.

It is easy to find people that will say what we want them to say. If we want to justify that fact jesus wants us to have a certain diet, live a life of luxury or a life of of being poor, or that sex is ok before marriage. Or if we want the Bible to say that we don't need the church, or that we can still be angry at people and not forgive them or that it is ok to tell someone off because you are speaking the truth. We can find people who will support us and twist the Bible into saying what we want it to say. we look for that affirmation rather than looking for God to change us to align with his word. We look for ways to change the truth to align with us. Google it and you will find it. But that is a sad day when we look for that. We miss out so much of what God wants to say to us because we are caught up with issues rather than hearing God.

Who wrote Heavens Guarantee?

on .

Hebrews 7:22 (NLT)
22 Because of this oath, Jesus is the one who guarantees this better covenant with God.

Guarantee of the new covenant and heaven does not rest with us but with God! Good thing. I can't even guarantee that I might not slip on the ice, never mind slip up in not making it to heaven. His guarantee is sooooo much better!!
